This Saturday the 19th, the Richardson Plano Kappa League, Frisco Kappa League and the Mann Up Mentoring Program of Plano ISD all embarked on an exciting college visit to Langston University in Oklahoma for its Homecoming weekend. The visit offered an exceptional opportunity for our young leaders to experience the vibrant culture of an HBCU, engage with university athletics leadership, see the way the college turn out for homecoming weekend, and witness a thrilling football game, all while bonding during a memorable road trip from Plano, Texas.

The journey began early in the morning, as the brothers and Kappa Leaguers hit the road, full of anticipation and camaraderie. The ride itself was a time for bonding, quiet at first, but then the students got more lively with discussions about any and everything, some talk about college life, and the importance of higher education. The laughter and shared experiences on the road set the tone for the day ahead.

Upon arriving at Langston, the group was warmly welcomed by the undergraduate brothers of Kappa Alpha Psi, who led a campus tour. The Leaguers were given an in-depth look at the rich history of Langston University and its significance as a leading Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in the region. From the state-of-the-art facilities to the engaging academic programs, the tour provided a firsthand glimpse of the opportunities awaiting them in higher education.

A key highlight of the trip was a discussion with a representative from Langston’s university athletics organization. The Kappa Leaguers learned about the school’s athletic programs, academic support for student-athletes, and the importance of balancing sports with academics. This was particularly meaningful, as many of the Leaguers and those in attendance have aspirations in sports and appreciated hearing directly from university professionals.

The group then enjoyed a tailgating lunch, soaking up the festive Homecoming atmosphere. The smells of BBQ and the sounds of celebration filled the air as students, alumni, and visitors came together in a show of school spirit. It was the perfect backdrop for fellowship and networking, with everyone enjoying good food and even better company.

Later, Brother Burnett led a leadership practical leadership exercise, encouraging the Kappa Leaguers to listen to instructions, put together a plan, communicate the plan, and execute a set of fun activities that offer on the spot awards and recognitions.  This was reinforcing skills that future leaders must have to be successful. His guidance helped frame the day as not just a celebration of football and homecoming festivities, but also as an important step in personal and leadership development.

The day culminated in the much-anticipated Homecoming football game, where Langston’s Lions faced off against their rivals. The atmosphere in the stadium was electric, with the Langston Lions Marching Band delivering a phenomenal halftime show. The music, the energy, and the spirit of the band were unforgettable, embodying the pride and tradition of Langston University. The game itself was thrilling, with Langston pulling off a hard-fought victory to the delight of the homecoming crowd.

As the group made their way back to Plano, the energy from Saturday continued to buzz throughout the bus. The shared experience of the college tour, combined with the rich traditions of Langston University and the bonds formed during the trip, left a lasting impact on everyone involved. This college tour was more than just a visit to a university, it was an opportunity for the Kappa Leaguers to see firsthand what an HBCU has to offer, and to visualize their own future success in higher education.
