On Saturday, September 20, the RPA Kappa League kicked off their fall semester college tour with an impactful and exciting trip to Texas College in Tyler, Texas. The day was packed with activities designed to foster leadership and critical thinking, all while immersing the young men in the vibrant culture of a historically black college and university (HBCU).

The journey began with a lively van ride, setting the stage for a day of bonding and camaraderie. The Kappa Leaguers got to know one another, sharing their favorite music, talking about high school life, and engaging in other funny and lighthearted conversations. This shared experience helped build a sense of community and excitement for the day ahead.

A Glimpse into Texas College’s Legacy and Campus Life
The tour began with an introduction to the rich history of Texas College. Founded in 1894 by a group of ministers from the Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) Church, the institution was established to provide higher education for African-American students in East Texas. Over its 130-year history, Texas College has evolved into a key institution for liberal arts education, maintaining its commitment to academic excellence and community development.

The Kappa Leaguers got a comprehensive look at life as a Texas College student through an extensive campus walking tour. They explored the key facilities that form the backbone of student life and academics, including the dormitories, the D.R. Glass Library, and the Student Union Building. The tour also showcased the academic halls for sciences and leadership, as well as the main auditorium and the Gus F. Taylor Gymnasium.

The group had the unique opportunity to meet with current Texas College students, including Kiela, a proud member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (AKA), and two members of Kappa Alpha Psi, Inc., one of whom, Brother Micah Law, is a former RPGRF Kappa Leaguer. Their stories served as a powerful testament to the opportunities available at HBCUs and the lasting impact of the Kappa League program. The tour also highlighted the college’s thriving arts scene, with a special meeting with Charles Shaw, the music choir director, whose leadership has guided the Texas College choir to be recognized as a number one choir among HBCUs.

Leadership and Competition
Kappa Leaguers jumped right into an exciting leadership exercise focused on decision-making and critical thinking. In a high-stakes, 10-minute session, participants were challenged to work together to select specific actions and activities that would maximize their “vetting score.” The day’s competitive spirit continued with a math competition, where the quickest to find the correct answer was recognized for their sharp analytical skills.

Our Own Tailgate and A Thrilling Football Game
The day concluded with a generous dinner prepared by the Brothers of the Tyler Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi, Inc. A heartfelt thank you to the Rose City Nupse for their hospitality and for providing a delicious meal that brought everyone together. It was an opportunity for students to mingle with the other chapter student and check out the impressive classic and custom car collection of Brother Nico Hernandez!

The evening’s highlight was a thrilling football game, where the Texas College Steers took on the Langston University Lions. The game provided a classic HBCU game day experience, with the stands full of energy and school spirit. The RPGRF Kappa Leaguers left the campus not only with a greater understanding of college life but also with a sense of inspiration and possibility for their own futures.

The ride home was filled with reflections and fond memories of the day. As they made their way back, the Kappa Leaguers had a new sense of purpose, knowing they had spent quality time learning about college, strengthening their friendships, and preparing for the rest of the semester. This trip to Texas College was a powerful reminder of the bright futures that lie ahead
